MACINTOSH INTERNET SETUP

This page covers Internet service setup options for Macintosh computers. Use these menu items to jump to each section:

    TCP/IP Setup

    1.Go to your Control Panels and open TCP/IP.
    2.You will see the following screen:

    3.Change "Connect via:" to one of the following:
    • MacPPP if you're using ConfigPPP
    • FreePPP if you're using FreePPP
    • PPP if you're using Open Transport PPP
      (Standard in Mac OS 8.x)
    4.Configure should be set to Using PPP server.
    5.For the Name server addresses, please enter:
    • 64.118.98.89 and
    • 64.118.98.90

    6.under Search domains, Enter sierratel.com
    7.Close TCP/IP.

    FREE PPP 2.5 SETUP

    1.If you don't have it already, you can download FreePPP from Rockstar Studios
    2.Open the FreePPP Folder on your hard disk.
    3.Double click the FreePPP Setup icon.
    4.You will see the following screen:

    5.Click the Modem Setup button found at the bottom of the window.
    6.You will see the following screen:

    7.Make sure you are connected to the Modem Port.
    8.Click OK.
    9.Click the Accounts tab at the top of the window.
    10.You will see the following screen:

    11.If you do not already have an STI account, please click New.
    12.If you do already have an STI account, please click Edit
    13.You will see the following screen:

    14.Enter the proper local dial-up telephone number in the appropriate field.

    NOTE:Check with your telephone company to assure the number you are dialing is local and toll free. STI cannot be responsible for your modem dialing a number which carries a long distance charge.

    15.You should choose to connect Directly.

    16.Enter your User name and Password where asked. Remember that STI usernames are always lowercase. Passwords are case sensitive.
    17.Click the Connection tab.
    18.You will see the following screen:

    19.Choose your Port Speed. This should be 115,200 for 56k modem, 57600 for 28.8 modem and 38400 for 14.4 modems. 20.The Flow Control should be set to CTS & RTS (DTR).
    21.Check your modem manual for the correct modem initialization string. ATZ, AT&F, or AT&F1 are good default settings if you are unsure of the correct string for your modem.
    22.Click the Options tab.
    23.You will see the following screen:

    24.You need not change anything in this window.
    25.Click OK.
    26.You will be brought back to the main FreePPP Setup window. To connect to STI from here, just click the Connect button. FreePPP will dial your modem and connect you to STI. If it doesn't work, please go through this page and check your settings again.

    ConfigPPP Setup

    1.Open ConfigPPP, which can be found in your Control Panels.
    2.You will see the following screen:

    3.Click Config...
    4.You will see the following screen:

    5.Fill in a name for the PPP Server. "STI" is fine.
    6.The port speed can be set at 115,200 for a 56k modem, 57600 if you have a 28.8 modem. If you have a 14.4 modem, set the port speed to 38400.
    7.Flow Control should be CTS&RTS (DTR).
    8.Make sure the Tone Dial button is selected.
    9.Enter the local phone number that you will be using to dial into STI where it asks for Phone num. (If you need to disable call waiting, put *70 in front of the phone number for most telephone exchanges.
    10.Most modems don't require a modem initialization string for the Mac, but there are two exceptions:

     

  • The first is for Global Village modems. If you have this kind, please make the modem string AT&F1&K0&K3.
  • If you have a Supra Modem, enter AT&F1 in the modem init (initialization) area. If neither of these options work for you, you can always try ATZ.

    11.Click Authentication...
    12.You will see the following screen:

    13.Enter your username in all lower case letters where it asks for Auth. ID and your password where it asks for Password. The password will appear as dots so nobody else can read it. Make sure you type it correctly. If your password has upper case characters in it, make sure that you type it that way!
    14.Click OK.
    15.Click the LCP Options button.
    16.You will see the following screen:

    17.Make the Timeout value 15 seconds.
    18.Click OK.
    19.Click the IPCP Options button.
    20.You will see the following screen:

    21.Make the Timeout value 15 seconds and click OK.
    22.Click Done to finish.

    MacTCP Setup

    1.Go to your System Folder.
    2.Open your Control Panels.
    3.Open MacTCP. You will see the following screen:

    4.Highlight PPP by clicking on it.
    5.Click the More... button.
    6.You will see the following screen:

    7.The first thing you want to do is click the Manually option under Obtain Address.
    8.Next, enter 0.0.0.0 as the Gateway Address in the Routing Information box.
    9.Click Server in the Obtain Address box.
    10.In the Domain Name Server Information box, erase any information that is presently there and enter sti.net as the domain on the first line and 64.118.98.89 as the IP Address in the box to the right of it.
    11.In the second line, put a period ( . ) as the domain. Enter
    64.118.98.90 as the IP Address.
    12.In the third line, put a period ( . ) as the domain. Enter
    64.118.98.90 as the IP Address.
    13.Make sure the top Default button is filled in (active). This will blank the other two buttons below it.
    14.Click OK.
    15.Restart your Mac.

    Setup is now complete.
