Flora
Springs Trilogy - 2002 - Napa - $58.00
The 2002 vintage of Trilogy is the first year we have
used all five Bordeaux varietals. The tannin structure
of the wine is slightly firmer than the past couple of
years and should add to the ageability of the wine over
time. There is huge forward fruit of black cherry and
cassis from the Cabernet Sauvignon, with a touch of raspberry
from the Merlot, tobacco and cedar from the Cabernet Franc,
the Petit Verdot adds a complex plummy character and the
Malbec adds a ruby richness to pull it all together. This
wine lingers on the palate and finishes beautifully. |

This wine’s elegance and refinement starts with the lush entry and continues through the mid-palate and on to a long, pleasing finish. |

Massolino
Barolo - 2001 - Italy - Serralunga d’Alba -
$50.00
For this wine, grapes from all the Massolino vineyards
are blended to maintain a consistent quality level, which
can be difficult in poor vintages. The deep garnet core
lightens several shades as it moves to the watery rim.

the heady spice notes to the delicate floral tones. Full-bodied
on the palate with deft tannins and mouthwatering acidity,
the flavors stretch from forest berry fruit to eucalyptus
and cedar. |

Tenuta
San Guido Sassicaia - 2002 - Italy - Tuscany (Bolgheri
coastal zone) - $180.00
The Sassicaia 2002 is one of the few wines of this vintage
that was honered with "3 bicchieri" (3 glasses,
the highest award) in the Guide "Vini 2006"
by Gambero Rosso and the "5 grappoli" (5 clusters,
the highest award) in the Guide "Duemilavini 2006"
by the A.I.S. (Italian Sommelier Association). The Sassicaia
hallmarks shine through even in this difficult vintage:
elegant, slightly closed on the nose, silky-smooth entry
on the palate and compact tannins in the finish. Less
berry fruit, more savoury mineral character but still
lovely balance and good prospects for midterm. 2006 -

J.
Lohr - 2002 - Carol’s Vineyard - Napa Valley
- $40.00
Rich, dark red with youthful purple hues. The 2002 ‘Carols’
was a treat to ferment, giving up some of the most luscious
varietal aromas of currant and dark cherry. One of the
most obvious traits to this wine is the beautiful dark
purple colors that it gives up so easily during fermentation.
The Petit Verdot adds dark tarry and licorice characters
to the aroma and palate. The oak is chosen to highlight
these primary fruit characters and complement the wine
with vanilla and toasty secondary components. This wine
is a treat to make and should be as equally pleasurable
to drink in its youth and with 15-20 years of aging. This
wine is ideally suited to red meats and pork, or tomato-based
dishes. |
|

 |
Ladera
- 2003 - $37.00
The 2003 vintage was a cool year with a later harvest,
from mid September to late October. Because of the mild
year, the wine is characterized by the fruit forward aromas
of bright cherry, raspberry and black fruits. The palate
is soft and approachable, with elegant, velvety tannins.
The high percentage of Cabernet from Howell Mountain also
adds to the approachability of this wine because of the
characteristic smooth tannins. The 2003 Ladera Napa Valley
should be ready to drink earlier than past vintages but
also has the depth and structure to age well for the next
10 years. |

- $24.00

towards the back. The tannins are firm, smooth, and polished,
leaving a silky and supple texture in the mouth, supported
by a subtle seam of acidity. This wine leaves an experience
with the taster. Our Enologist, Greg Freeman, describes
the wine as “a warm cedar chest at Grandma’s
house.” With the comforting feeling and visions
this analogy may evoke, I think this would be an ideal
wine for many of the dishes you might find at a family
gathering. Try it with a baked meatloaf smothered in a
tomato and basil sauce, grilled New York Strip steak basted
in butter, garlic, and fresh, cracked pepper, or fragrant
Moroccan lamb stew. |
